MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS

To mount the FASTTRACK onto a bench or work surface (fig 3).

  • Slide the FASTTRACK carriage top off the base.
  • Place the base in a suitable position on your work surface.
  • Using a No.2 Pozi® screwdriver, screw the No.B countersink screw through the base mounting hole in to the bench.
  • Check the head of the screw sits flush in the base.
  • Slide the carriage top back into position.

Your FASTTRACK is now ready to use.

Making a mounting board for holding the FASTTRACK in a vice (fig 4).

Materials required:

1 x piece ply or MDF 10 x B x 314″ (240 x 220 x 18mm)
1 x wood batten 8 x 2 x 2″ (220 x 50 x 50mm)
5 x No 8 counter sunk screws

Note: The board can be any reasonable size providing the 4 x rubber feat of the Base sit comfortably on it.

  • Position the batten along the front or vice facing edge.
  • Mark and Drill a line of piot holes through the board approx. 25mm in from the edge.
  • Screw and glue (if necessary) the batten light up against the board, wipe away the excess glue.
  • When the glue has dried follow the preceding instructions for fitting the FASTTRACK to the board.

SET-UP

The back of the tool (the un-bevelled side) must be ground absolutely flat before sharpening. This process is imperative if a razor sharp finish is to be achieved.

    • Choose your desired sharpening angle (25° or 30°)indicated by the carriage sticker.
    • Choose the Diamond Cross Preparation Stone (Black).
    • Fit the Diamond Stone into the recess on the underside of the carriage wing (fig 5), then slide the carriage onto the base. Ensure that both dovetails interlock correctly.

    • Place the tool to be sharpened flat side down on the tool recess and push it forward until it makes contact with the Diamond Stone (fig 6).

Compare what you see with the below diagrams (fig 7)

  1. Shows full contact between the Diamond Stone and tool bevel.
  2. Shows contact between the Diamond Stone and tool cutting edge.

If your tool looks like either 1 or 2 you are ready to sharpen. Proceed to SHARPENING.

3. Should your blade make contact at the top or middle of the bevel or be very badly damaged, a large amount of material will need to be ground away before the edge can be worked on.

This can be done with the coarsest Diamond Stone, but will take considerable time.

The larger the blade and the more material needing to be removed the longer the process will take.

Where large amounts of material need to be removed we recommend the use of a powered grinding wheel.

You should grind your tool edge to the desired angle or slightly less. E.g. 24° for a 25° finish.

SHARPENING

At this point you should already have the FASTTRACK set up with the Diamond Cross Preparation Stone. This is the coarsest stone included and will remove the most material in the quickest time.

Note: You may wish to skip to the Diamond Cross Finishing stone, dspending on the amount of material you wish to remove.

    • Place the tool to be sharpened flat side down on the Tool Recess against either of the shoulders (fig 8).
    • There is a small amount of float between the Carriage and Base.
    • Take up this float by moving tha Carriage away from the tool (fig 9).

    • Move the tool forward untll tt makes contact with the Diamond Stone then hold it firmly in position against the shoulder.
    • Slide the Carriage back towards the tool. **Note the Carriage rises slightly. (fig 10)

    • Applying gentle pressure against the tool.
    • Slide the Carriage backwards and forwards whilst keeping the side of the tool firmly against the shoulder (fig 11).

  • Regularly check the cutting edge of the tool. When a burr or wire forms across the entire width of the back/underside of the tool it indicates that you are ready to move on to a finer stone.

REMOVING THE BURR

    • Remove the burr/wire from the back of the tool cutting edge using the finest grade of diamond stone.
Ensure that the stone is held flat to the back of the tool.

Note: Some burrs/wires may require stropping.
Note: Removing the burr/wire on the Diamond Plate may cause scratching if the underside of your tool has a polished finish.

CREATING A MICRO SECONDARY BEVEL

Creating a micro secondary angle on your tool will provide an even keener edge; it also reduces the amount of material needed to be removed when re-touching the blade.

    • Move the carriage away from the tool.
    • Gently lift the carriage wing until it is stopped by the dovetail.

This will alter the sharpening angle by approximately 0.5 to 1 Degree.

    • Slide the sharpened tool forward untll it gently touches the diamond stone.
    • Take three light sharpening strokes.

Do not use excessive force during this operation.

    • If a burr/wire has formed it will need to be removed.

To further improve the blade edge, remove and finish the tool on a strop or similar.

HINTS AND TIPS

It is not necessary to use excessive pressure in any direction when using the FASTTRACK. The diamond cutting action feels ‘soft’ but is still affective.

If you find difficulty in seeing the progress of the grinding action, try marking the cutting edge of the tool with a dark-colour spirit/marker pen. This will clearly show where material is being removed.

Once a tool has been properly sharpened, it should only take llght sharpening to maintain the edge. ‘Little and often’ is preferable to major re-sharpening.

It will be almost impossible to achieve a true edge if the back/underside of the tool is pitted or distorted. Time spent properly ‘flatting’ the tool will ensure a good result.

MAINTENANCE

The FASTTRACK has been designed to operate over along period of time with the minimum of maintenance. Continual satisfactory operation depends upon proper tool care and regular cleaning.

  • Regularly clean with a soft cloth. Pay particular attention to the carriage magnets as metal dust can accumulate in this area preventing tha diamond stone from sitting flat against the underside of the carriage wing.
  • Your FASTTRACK requires regular cleaning and lubrication of the Carriage dovetails.
  • After use store in packaging, or if fitted to a mounting board, in a cupboard.
  • If mounted to a bench the accessory should ba covered with a dustcover.
